What Is the Chat Assistant?
The Brim AI chat assistant is a built-in tool that lets you ask questions about your project data using plain language. It lives on every page in Brim and automatically uses the context of the page you are on to give focused, relevant answers.
It is scoped to your current project, it will not pull information from other projects or answer general questions unrelated to Brim.
How to open it
Click the chat icon in the bottom corner of any Brim page. The chat panel will slide open. You can close it at any time by clicking the X or pressing Escape.
You can also open a full-screen version by clicking “Open chat in full page” inside the panel. Your conversation history carries over automatically.
The assistant automatically picks up context from the page you are viewing. You will see a context pill at the top of the chat panel that shows what it is currently aware of. For example:
- On a Patient Page, it knows the patient’s name, MRN, and diagnosis details
- On a Document Page, it knows which document you have open
- On Variable Setup or Decision Setup pages, it knows the variable or dependent variable you are working with
Navigating to the relevant page before asking your question will always give you the most accurate answer.
Examples Of What You Can Ask:
Patient and document questions
When you are on a patient or document page, you can ask questions like:
- “Who is the patient?” returns the patient’s name, MRN, DOB, and diagnosis
- “Summarize this document” produces a summary of the document you currently have open
Variable and project setup
On variable or decision pages, the assistant can explain your configuration:
- “What is this variable’s instruction?” - returns the instruction, options, and default value
- “What are this dependent variable’s input variables?” - returns the input variables
- “Why is this variable returning FALSE?” - explains unexpected or default values and suggests improvements
Label review and results
When reviewing generated labels or results, you can ask:
- “Show me the results for this patient” - scoped to any variable and patient filters you have applied
- “Are the results correct for this patient?” - analyzes results and flags anything that looks off
- “How do I improve this variable?” - offers instruction and default value recommendations
How-to and documentation
The assistant can answer questions about how to use Brim itself and will link to relevant help articles:
- “How do I create a variable?”
- “How do I export my data?”
- “How do I submit a support ticket?”
What It Won’t Answer
The assistant is focused on your project data and Brim’s features. It will let you know if you ask something outside its scope, such as:
- Questions about other projects
- General questions unrelated to Brim
- Direct requests to edit your variables or settings, it can explain how, but cannot make changes for you
