Importing a REDCap Data Dictionary CSV

If you already have a data dictionary defined in REDCap, Brim can import it as a starting point.

NOTE: Brim has two methods of importing variables from REDCap. This article describes download ing your REDCap data dictionary to CSV and importing it to Brim but you can also connect to the REDCap API as described here.

To do this:

1. Go to "Project Setup", and click "Load RedCap Data Dictionary".

2. Click "Upload CSV", "Choose File" and then select the REDCap Data Dictionary CSV from your computer. Click "Upload".

3. Brim will review the file and create a list of variables. You can change variable names and summaries to tweak the generated variables.

  • By default, Brim will try to map variables onto existing project variables to avoid duplicates. You can disable this option at the bottom of the page.

4. Once you're satisfied with the variable list, click "Generate Variables".

5. Once the variables are generated, you can review and edit individual variable definitions by clicking "Expand". When you're satisfied with the definitions, click "Save Variables".

See the step by step below:

NOTE: Brim currently skips Dependent Variables and adds them to a file you can download at the bottom of this page, or in "Manage REDCap Data" later.
