Import patient documents from an EHR (SMART on FHIR)

Pull a patient's clinical notes straight from your EHR into Brim, no manual file export required. Launch Brim, sign in to your EHR, and Brim imports the patient's notes from the time range specified and runs generation automatically.

Note: This feature is off by default. If you'd like it enabled for your account, contact support@brimanalytics.com to get it configured.

How to import

  1. Open a project and click + Add Data.
  2. Click Import from EHR.
  3. Sign into your EHR and pick the patient you want.
  4. Brim imports the patient's notes and runs generation.

A live progress page tracks each phase. When it finishes, you land on the patient's labels page.

Import options

Before importing, you can adjust how much is pulled and what happens next:

  • Days back to pull — choose how far back to retrieve documents (for example, the last 365 days).
  • Limit to specific document names — restrict the import to particular document types or names instead of pulling everything.
  • Generate labels — leave this checked to generate variable labels automatically after loading. Uncheck it to populate the patient's data without generating labels.

What you'll see during import

The progress page moves through three phases, each marked with a green check as it completes:

  • Pulling — Brim retrieves the patient's documents from the EHR.
  • Loading — documents are processed into the project.
  • Generating — Brim generates labels, then redirects you to the patient's labels page.

What Brim imports

Brim pulls clinical notes and reports from the time frame you specificied and converts each attachment to text. Unsupported file types are skipped.

Imported documents flow through the same pipeline as CSV uploads, so patient creation, deduplication, and label generation all work the way you're used to.

Security and logging

Every FHIR import is logged. You can review all FHIR loads on the project's "Manage Project" page in "User Access Logs".

Note: When FHIR import is enabled for a site, it applies to all projects at that site.  It can't currently be limited to specific projects at this time.
